APRI Funds Four New Research Projects, Request for Proposal - BSE Testing - CANADA

APRI Funds Four New Research Projects

Three researchers from the University of Alberta, Debra Davidson, Debbie McKenzie, David Westaway, and Markus Czub, from the University of Calgary, have recently been awarded funding to conduct studies on targeted prion related topics. These research investments, totaling over $1.5 million, are enhancing Alberta’s international presence in prion and protein misfolding disease research – diseases which are infectious, untreatable and fatal.

The four new funded projects are:

Identification of Biomarkers in Cerebrospinal Fluid and Serum Specific for Neurological Diseases in Cattle

Dr. Czub and his team will develop maps to show the connections between all proteins associated with different neurological disorders of cattle. These maps will then be used to identify specific disease markers or to detect classical and atypical forms of BSE. The biomarkers identified in the maps may be useful in developing an accurate and economical pre-mortem TSE test.

Improving TSE Mitigation Through Institutional Analysis of Response Strategies: A Comparative Study of Alberta and Ontario, Canada

Dr. Davidson’s study will analyze the factors that influenced the response to the BSE crisis since the Canadian outbreak in 2003 in hopes of providing information useful to all levels of government for the development of public policies regarding TSEs.

Fate of Prion-Infected Cells

Dr. McKenzie’s research will aim to determine the mechanisms and pathways that lead to neuron loss during the course of prion infection. The identification of the molecular pathways involved in cell fate will help in the development of therapeutic interventions for prion diseases.

A Parallel Platform Resource for Measuring Prion Infectivity

To further explore the risks associated with prion infectivity, Dr. Westaway’s study will test for the presence of infectious prions in Specified Risk Materials (SRMs) before and after candidate inactivation procedures. This testing capability will yield rapid, high quality data that will facilitate informed decisions of prion risk and mitigation strategies for the province of Alberta.

(Dr. Westaway's project is co-funded by the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency)

Request for Proposal - BSE Testing The Alberta Prion Research Institute and PrioNet Canada, in partnership with the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA) are requesting submission of proposals to study a voluntary BSE testing system based on private industry standards. The study will include a rigorous cost and risk versus benefit analysis.

Partnerships: Current and Upcoming Activities Within and outside Alberta, APRI will continue to build partnerships that maximize its research investments.

APRI and PrioNet Canada co-fund projects that link academic research with specific industry-identified challenges such as: anti-mortem testing and testing for targeted markets, Specified Risk Material (SRM) disposal and new uses, implications of prions in the environment and the spread and control of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

The Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA) and APRI have recently solidified their partnership and are now also co-funding research projects.

In collaboration, APRI, PrioNet and ALMA submitted a Request for Proposal to study a voluntary BSE testing system based on private industry standards. These three organizations are also working together in the area of risk management with provincial and federal participation.

Working with partners makes it possible to share ideas, expertise, technology and resources. It facilitates the transfer of knowledge, avoids duplication of effort and helps us get the biggest ban for our buck.

Report on the monitoring and testing of ruminants for the presence of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) in the EU in 2008

Report on the monitoring and testing of ruminants for the presence of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) in the EU in 2008

1. SUMMARY In 2008, a total of 10 051 584 bovine, 465 276 ovine and 152 037 caprine animals were tested in the EU 27 in the framework of the TSE monitoring programmes. 125 bovine, 1 936 ovine and 1 214 caprine animals turned out positive. 1 557 871 risk bovine animals and 8 490 256 healthy animals slaughtered for human consumption were tested by rapid tests. 2 352 bovine animals were tested in the framework of passive surveillance (animals reported as official BSE suspects. In addition, 1 105 animals were tested in the framework of culling of animals with an epidemiological connection to a BSE case. 93 % of positive cases were detected by the active monitoring (testing of risk animals, healthy slaughtered and culled cattle) and 7 % were detected by passive surveillance. No BSE cases were found in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Romania, Slovenia and Sweden. The number of BSE cases and the overall prevalence in tested animals decreased by respectively 29 % and 25 % in 2008 compared to 2007. 463 201 ovine animals were tested by active monitoring, while 2 075 were animals reported as official TSE suspects and therefore subjected to laboratory examination. In caprine animals, the numbers of tests in the respective groups were 150 566 (active monitoring) and 1 471 (TSE suspects). Some 743 and 63 TSE cases in respectively sheep and goats confirmed in 2008 were subjected to discriminatory testing. None of them have been confirmed to be BSE. In addition, in the framework of a survey for chronic wasting disease (CWD) in cervids, as required in Commission Decision 2007/182/EC, 12 025 animals were tested between 2006 and 2008 hunting seasons. None of them turned out positive. All Member States submitted information on the TSE testing of bovine, ovine and caprine animals. In addition to the Member States, Norway also submitted information on their TSE testing programmes.
